Walking up to a great view

No visit to Terre-de-Haut would be complete without a hike up to Fort Napoleon. The 1.5km walk (which Mark said was really .5km if you could walk in a straight line but of course the road didn’t do that) took us up to the very well maintained fort. Sharron, John, Mark and I made the trek up the hill on Tuesday March 10th around 10 am. The current fort was completed in 1867 but it never saw any battles. The fort is now a museum and a botanical garden full of local succulents and cacti. We were all very impressed with the condition of the fort and the amazing array of local plants. But most impressive was the view!! It was well worth the hike up!!

I can’t forget to mention how Mark and I started our day on Tuesday. After a terrible night of rolling and bouncing, we decided to get out of the main harbour. There was one ball available in the little bay where Sharron and John were moored so we quickly moved over. We were settled on our new mooring ball by 8am – it was probably the fastest we’ve ever changed anchorages!! It was certainly a good move – the new mooring field called Pain de Sucre was much calmer and definitely more sheltered from wave action. It did make for a much longer dinghy ride to reach the main dinghy dock but that was okay!

Today March 11th is our last day in Guadeloupe. Mark and John have gone into town to get our exit document printed and signed. We have a good window to jump south to Dominica in the morning. We’ll spend the day making some water and getting ready for tomorrow’s crossing.

On the way up to the fort – view of the east side of Terre-de-Haut.
