Slowing down in Bequia

The past few days have been a very welcome change from the go, go , go we’ve been doing lately. We’ve visited the town a few times now and also got some needed work done.

On March 21st, we walked up to “Fort Hamilton” with Sharron and John. To call this spot a fort is a bit of a stretch – it’s really a gazebo with 5 canons overlooking the entrance to the harbour. The walk up to it was fairly easy and we did have an awesome view! After that we walked back to the town and had a really good lunch at one of the many little restaurants. It was a true island lunch – took a long time to order and get our food but it was very tasty.

Mark and I returned to the boat to address our fridge problem. Before we left for our walk that morning, Mark had turned the fridge up all the way (just to see what would happen). Well wouldn’t you know that the fridge was working when we returned (not working well but cooling). So now what?! I emptied out the fridge while Mark looked at the compressor located in the cockpit locker. It didn’t take long for Mark to discover the fuse he put in place last year had blown. Replacing that got the switch lights working again. The next job was to replace the wire and that took most of the afternoon. By dinner time, everything was put back together and was working properly.

On Sunday, March 22 the big job was to look at the black water macerator pump (which is not working). I’ve already talked about this crappy job!! It was a hot morning so that made the job even yuckier! After several hours of testing the pump, checking for clogs and lots of other tests, the darn thing was still not working. With that job put on hold for a day, we decided to do a little snorkeling with Sharron. We swam over to the rocky shore near our boat and about halfway there, we encountered a turtle. This turtle was very interested in me – it circled around me, giving me a good look over. It was super cool! We also saw many colourful fish around the not so good looking coral. Sharron pointed out an octopus and we also saw eels, sea snakes and a stingray. We ended our day with a nice happy hour with Sharron and John on shore.
